Diet

If you are in good health, you are maximising your chances of conceiving. A vital part of a healthy lifestyle is your diet. We have outlined what you should and should not do when you are trying for a baby.

Supplements

If you eat a good balanced diet you should not need to take any supplements. If you do want to take a supplement, make sure you take one which is specifically for pregnant (or those trying) women. These supplements generally do not contain vitamin A which may cause developmental problems in the foetus. Your doctor can advise you on which supplements to take.

Folic Acid

Folic acid is one of the B vitamins and all women who are trying for a baby should take it. Folic acid reduces the risk of having a child with spina bifida.

You should continue taking folic acid for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Your GP can perscribe a folic acid supplement.

Foods to avoid include
  • Liver - Contains Vitamin A
  • Lightly-cooked eggs - Possibility of Salmonella poisioning
  • Undercooked meats - Possibility of catching listeria
  • Soft Cheese - Possibility of catching listeria
In general terms, only eat food which is well prepared and cooked.
