Travelling during pregnancy is usually not a problem, when precautions are taken and you follow the advice of your doctor. To help you we have compiled a list of 10 things to do before/when you are travelling
- Always discuss your travel plans with your doctor.
- If you are intending an extended stay abroard, remember, most airlines will not allow passengers to fly after 36 weeks and many require a doctors letter if you are between 28-36 weeks. Check with your airline before you fly, what their policy is.
- If you are flying move around as much as possible during the flight. Get up and walk up and down the aisle regularly.
- Try to avoid an area where you could catch Malaria. If you really have to travel to a Malaria area, check and discuss it with your doctor. Folic acid is required with certain anti-Malaria tablets.
- Wear loose and comfortable clothes when travelling
- Don't drink alcohol on the plane, drink plenty of water and drink bottled water at your destination if the local water is risky or you are unsure.
- Make sure your insurance is still valid if you are pregnant.
- Try to avoid travelling to countries which require vaccinations, but if you have to go discuss it with your doctor. Some vaccinations are not recommended at certain stages of pregnancy.
- Eat small light meals when travelling, bring some snacks along with you.
- Follow all the usual precautions which you would take at home.
