We start counting the nine months of pregnancy, before the egg actually becomes fertilised by the sperm. The nine months of pregnancy actually starts on the first day or your last period. The egg doesn't become fertilised until about 2 weeks later.
About a week after the sperm fertilises the egg, it attaches itself to the lining of the womb. This is called Implantation. The egg develops at a very fast rate and the developing egg is called an embryo at this stage.
After implantation, the placenta and umbilical cord start to form. These feed the embryo and remove the baby's waste.
After one month the embryo is only 2 weeks old and is just the size of the top of a pen
The sperm determines the sex of your baby. The sex is determined as soon as the egg is fertilised.
The baby's heart, lungs, brain and nervous system start developing.
