There are so many toys available for toddlers it can be difficult to choose a toy which will be fun, educational, help their development and of course safe. Thats a tough list to satisfy, but we have a guide for those choosing baby or toddler toys.

Simple stacking blocks can be a great toy, they are so simple but they allow the toddler or child to create whatever they want - a house , a car, a tree. It also teaches them about cause and effect e.g. if they build the blocks up too high or put them on roughly they all collapse. They also help develop the motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination - so much from such a simple toy!.

General Rules

There are certain general rules which should be adhered to when choosing a toddlers toy. Make sure the toy doesn't contain any sharp edges that can easily cut small hands, or any small removable or electronic parts that can become a choking hazard. Read the packaging carefully and pay particular attention to any age appropriateness and warning labels.

Look for dolls with simple clothes, classic vehicles, building blocks sturdy play dishes and books with rhymes, pictures or jingles, read-along/interactive toys and toys that can be easily stored and are generally durable.

Simple Toys

Large and small muscle control, pretending, thinking and problem solving, nurturing and cuddling. Simple books and some things to enable kids to play or make music are also important. A few well-chosen basics from these areas will serve them and you better than a throng of elaborate playthings. These toys will grow with your toddler and provide years of fun. They are also classic so they will be useful for any subsequent toddlers that you may have.

The more a toddlers toy does, the less there is for a child to do. A plain toy phone will lead to more imaginative conversations than a phone with recorded messages, a wind-up car to push along gives better play value than a battery-powered racer.

In conclusion, keep it simple when it comes to toddlers toys and toddler activities. Choose safe simple toys which aid your childs development through enjoyable play. Check out our tips on Kids Chat Rooms
