What is attachment parenting

Attachment parenting is a style of looking after your baby that brings out the best in the child and in you.

Bonding

Sometimes medical complications keep you and your baby apart for a while. This can be very upsetting for the parents, but it is possible to catch-up when the complications have abated. Bonding is a series of steps in your lifelong growing together with your child, it is not just the initial contact after the birth.

Contact

Physical contact is very important in attachment parenting. There are many ways to implement that physical contact, including carrying your baby close to you, breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding promotes the right chemistry between mother and baby by stimulating your body to produce prolactin and oxytocin, hormones that give your mothering a boost.

Responding to your baby

You should try to understand you baby's cries. At the early stages, a baby will cry to communicate not to manipulate you. You will learn when your baby is in distress and when they just want to communicate with you.

It may not always be possible to implement all these steps, but if you do the best that you can do in your circumstances, know when to say yes and when to say no to your baby and establish a balance between responding to your baby and living your own life, you will have a happy and fruitful relationship with your baby.

Conclusions

Attachment parenting implies first opening your mind and heart to the individual needs of your baby, and eventually you will develop the wisdom on how to make on-the-spot decisions on what works best for both you and your baby.

It is an approach to parenting rather than a fixed set of strict rules that you must obey.
